Effects of hyperoxia on skeletal muscle carbohydrate metabolism during transient and steady-state exercise

Study name:  Effects of hyperoxia on skeletal muscle carbohydrate metabolism during transient and steady-state exercise

Gender/sex and ability:  Ten healthy, active male participants

Type of exercise used:  Cycling

Intensity of exercise:  Participants visited laboratory on three occasions: Once for a practice ride, twice for the experimental protocol. Participants underwent a full practice trial, which required them to breathe 21% or 60% oxygen through a mouthpiece for 20 minutes at rest and at 15 minutes of steady-state cycling.

Percent (%) of oxygen used:  21% or 60%

Research/study findings:  The study found the accumulation of muscle lactate was reduced by nearly 30% and blood lactate concentration was also lowered during 15-minute period of steady-state exercise in the hyperoxic trial.

Oxygen Plus application/implication:  The improvement in carbohydrate utilization vs. oxidation during hyperoxia resulted in a 29% decrease in the muscle lactate accumulation over 15 minutes of cycling compared with the normoxic trial. Oxygen Plus will similarly help restore depleted oxygen levels to healthy, normal levels during moderate exercise, effectively aiding in the reduction of the build-up of lactic acid.
