How Many Breaths Should I Take?
How much oxygen you want depends largely on what you're up to. In addition to your activity, the air around you may make a difference. If you're at a higher elevation or in polluted air, the amount of oxygen you'll need to breathe to restore your body's depleted oxygen levels to normal levels will be more. Normally, for healthy individuals in moderate situations, three to five breaths of O+ oxygen usually does the trick. Restoring your depleted oxygen levels to normal, healthy levels brings you back and helps you feel more like you again. For more information and suggestions based on various recreational activities, check out the O+ Usage Guide, which includes tips on how much oxygen you may want to take while working, traveling, studying, exercising, hiking, recovering from a late night out and more.
Does Breathing Oxygen Work?
As mentioned above, every person's response to breathing pure, recreational oxygen is different. Most people experience a feeling of invigoration and energy after a few deep breaths, and some experience a sense of calm. To really "feel" the effect or benefits of Oxygen Plus, breathe your O+ oxygen when you know your body's oxygen levels are depleted. If you're really in an oxygen debt, be sure to breathe enough to get back to status quo. To learn more about how O+ pure recreational oxygen works in the body, visit our oxygen research page. You can also read our product reviews to see how oxygen has helped real customers. Bottom line: try it yourself and discover when and how much Oxygen Plus you need to feel and perform your best.
Who Can Use Recreational Oxygen?
When used as directed, Oxygen Plus is safe to use by healthy people of all ages. There are no side effects and there are no added flavors, scents or ingredients - only pure recreational oxygen - quality controlled and filled in the U.S.. Think of it as breathing several deep breaths of clean ocean air in one inhalation - yet in a convenient, portable canister that delivers oxygen - your body's main energy source - straight to your cells so your body can use it to fuel your active lifestyle.
Any healthy, active person can use O+ recreational oxygen when the strains of modern life - stress, travel, exercise, alcohol, elevation, inactivity and pollution - lower the body's oxygen levels, leaving the individual feeling sluggish and depleted.
Professional athletes are able to use Oxygen Plus because it is not a WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) banned product. With the WADA establishing a lengthy list of off-limits substances for competitors, finding a competitive advantage can be a challenge - one that oxygen supplementation attempts to deliver.
If you are going to fly on a commercial airline in the U.S., arrange for your Oxygen Plus to be shipped to your destination - that is, if it's not already in your hotel mini bar. Currently, the FAA and TSA prohibit recreational oxygen canisters from being packed in checked or carry-on luggage.
Children should use recreational oxygen canisters with adult supervision, and any person with any type of health or medical condition should consult their physician prior to use of O+ products. Oxygen Plus products are intended for recreational, intermittent use only, not to be used as medical nor life-saving products. Prolonged use is defined as uninterrupted intake for more than eight hours.

How do I inhale O+ portable, recreational canned oxygen?
With O+ in hand, press the button backwards to release the flow.
Breathe in O+ through your mouth or nose.
Three to five breaths usually does the trick. It just depends on what you’re up to. Some inhale the whole can in one go if they’re playing hard or in environments with low oxygen content.
The O+ Elevate Pack flows gently – even on the first go – with an easy push of a button. The O+ Mini and O+ Skinni are equally oxygen-power-packed-full, however have a different release valve than the shell in the O+ Elevate Pack. For this reason, you may have to press the release valve of an O+ Mini or O+ Skinni more firmly on your first few hits. You may notice more oxygen flows out during the first few breaths than the last few breaths. To accommodate, simply increase the time you press down on the release valve and breathe in a little longer.
How long does it last?
The benefits of supplemental oxygen have varying durations, depending on the individual and the benefit. The feeling of alertness and mental clarity has been shown to last several minutes. Often the “feelings” of using supplemental oxygen depend on what you’re doing, your starting blood oxygen level, and how well you are breathing, among other things.
How do I know it’s working?
Each person’s response to breathing enriched oxygen will be different. The O+ experience is not equivalent to an energy rush from a shot of caffeine or other energy stimulant. After a few breaths, you should feel invigorated — either a mental or physical boost or a sense of calm. If you were to ascend to an elevation 3,000 feet or higher than your normal elevation, the effect of breathing O+ would be more noticeable, both physically and mentally. If you’re using O+ oxygen for intense exercise, you’ll likely find you perform better, feel stronger and more alert, and that you’ll have less exhaustion after working out. If you’re not feeling the benefits of breathing O+, try taking more frequent, shorter breaths, and don’t hold the breath of oxygen in your lungs longer than you would when taking a normal deep breath. Note that your overall health and physicality, in addition to proper usage, play into how much O+ your body needs to feel the effects of breathing O+.
What if I’m not “feeling” the benefits of Oxygen Plus?
If you’re breathing Oxygen Plus products correctly, but are still not “feeling” the effects of the oxygen in your mind or body, two possibilities are likely the culprit. 1) You may not have needed Oxygen Plus when you used it. Your body’s oxygen levels may already be optimal, or what’s considered “normal, healthy” oxygen levels of 96-99% SpO2. Sometimes if you’re feeling sluggish, you may just need energy from food, liquid or a nap. 2) If your body is oxygen depleted, yet you’re not feeling the benefits of breathing Oxygen Plus, you may not be inhaling enough. Your body’s oxygen levels may be significantly lower than what the standard dosage recommendation (3 to 5 deep breaths) can replenish in order for you to “feel” the difference. If this is the case, simply inhale more Oxygen Plus through your mouth or your nose until you feel more like you again, and have restored your body’s oxygen levels to 96-99% SpO2. If you want some guidance in learning when – and how much – Oxygen Plus your body needs to elevate your everyday life, pick up an oximeter (available for purchase at the O+ Store) until you’ve trained your body to recognize when it’s oxygen depleted.
What are the benefits of using Oxygen Plus?

- Optimize athletic performance

- Clear the morning fog after a late night out
What is pure recreational oxygen?
Under normal atmospheric conditions, ambient air contains 21% oxygen. That’s without considering the presence of compromised or polluted air. O+ products are enriched with a much higher concentration of oxygen – more than four times the normal air we breathe.
As the founders and pioneers of portable recreational oxygen, Oxygen Plus has set the standard and continues to redefine “pure recreational oxygen” through its revolutionary products and industry leadership. Oxygen Plus canisters are filled with pure recreational oxygen (which is the same purity as aviator’s breathing oxygen (ABO)) and each canister is designed to deliver — whether you breathe through your mouth or your nose — O+ pure recreational oxygen along with some ambient air (which, you’ll remember, is 21% oxygen)! While therefore impossible to measure, the actual percentage of O2 delivered with each breath is closer to 97% oxygen due to the process or application of breathing O+.
What does “portable” oxygen mean?
O+ products can easily fit in a purse, pack or briefcase with room to spare. Whether in a bar, the subway or in a stale office environment with poor air quality, the portability of O+ products offers the convenience of a sleek design that travels with you.
How does O+ define a breath and a “deep” breath?
We generously define an O+ breath or a “deep” breath as equaling approximately two seconds long. The way other recreational canned oxygen companies define a breath varies. Some define a breath as one second long. So, keep this in mind if you’re shopping for oxygen products. You might be interested to know an accurate way to compare products is to look at the volume of oxygen per canister volume – or the price per liters (litres) in a canister. Oxygen Plus's O+ Skinni, O+ Mini and O+ Elevate Pack offer more oxygen per can volume than any other canned oxygen on the market, and the O+ Biggi offers 7 liters of oxygen, which is a litre more than any other recreational oxygen canister currently made in the U.S.A.
How often can I use O+ products?
O+ can be used every day. We recommend using O+ any time you may be experiencing depleted oxygen levels – i.e., at a higher elevation, during and after intense exercise, where air pollution and stale air are prevalent, after a late night out. Note that all Oxygen Plus products are for recreational, intermittent use only. Prolonged use is defined as uninterrupted intake for more than 8 hours. WARNING: Persons with any type of health or medical condition should consult their physician prior to use of products.
Why should I be concerned about oxygen?
Your body is designed to function on 21% oxygen in the air you breathe. Polluted or stale air usually contains less than 21% oxygen, which can impede optimal functioning of your cells. Most importantly, your brain cells are the first affected, resulting in impaired reaction time and judgment. Since it is difficult to monitor atmospheric oxygen, we suggest trying a few quick breaths of O+ to help you feel mentally sharper, more alert and energetic.
Can I fly with O+?
Traveling by air can lower your body’s oxygen saturation levels by as much as 12%. A few deep breaths of O+ after a long flight can help you get where you’re going refreshed. You can have your O+ shipped directly to your destination – if it’s not already in the hotel mini bar. Currently, commercial airline passengers are not allowed to bring canned recreational oxygen in checked or carry-on luggage.
Could I use O+ products in an emergency situation such as a fire?
Not advised. Although oxygen gas is non-flammable, it accelerates fire and flames. In case you’re wondering, the cylinders worn by firefighters contain normal air.
Are O+ products recyclable?
Oxygen Plus is dedicated to providing the world pure oxygen with a minimal carbon footprint. O+ oxygen canisters are made of recyclable aluminum and are 100% recyclable after use. The plastic O-Stick in the O+ Elevate Pack is reusable, and the O+ Mini, O+ Skinni, and refills for the O-Stick can be recycled according to local recycling regulations. Completely empty the canisters before recycling.
What is the shelf life of a canister of O+?
The shelf life of Oxygen Plus products is two (2) years. FYI, oxygen - in and of itself - never “expires”. However, a long period of time, or a change in temperature, can cause a slight depletion of pressure, and thus, the amount of oxygen that may remain in the canister.
What research is available regarding the use of supplemental oxygen?
Good question. Check out oxygen research to learn about the science behind the benefits of breathing enriched oxygen.

People with impaired heart or lung function or other medical conditions should consult with their physician prior to using O+ products. O+ products are for recreational, intermittent use only.
