Rio 2016 Olympics Opening Ceremony: Friday, Aug. 5, 2016 at 7 p.m. EST. Every four years, the summer Olympics puts on quite a show at the Opening Ceremony. This year’s display will be no different, with a spectacular Parade of Nations and torch-bearing ceremony. Although ceremony details are typically kept secret, we do know that the famed Brazilian carnival is said to be a theme, according to event organizers.

  • Sunday, Aug. 7: Women’s gymnastics qualifications and men’s 4x100m freestyle swimming relay; the most decorated Olympian of all-time, Michael Phelps, will swim in the relay to kick off what is likely to be his final Olympic run
  • Monday, Aug. 8: Men’s team final gymnastics and100m backstroke swimming finals
  • Tuesday, Aug. 9: Women’s team final gymnastics and women’s swimming 200m free final

  • Sunday, Aug. 14: Men’s tennis single finals, women’s gymnastics and track and field; Sprint superstar Usain Bolt will compete to be the first Olympic men’s runner to win the same individual event three times in a row
  • Monday, Aug 15: Men’s gymnastics apparatus finals, men’s 800m final and women’s 400m final
  • Tuesday, Aug. 16: Women’s artistic floor gymnastics and men’s high jump
  • Wednesday, Aug. 17: Women’s long jump and women’s 200m
  • Thursday, Aug. 18: Men’s 200m final; this event is expected to be the final individual Olympic race ever for Usain Bolt
  • Friday, Aug. 19: Women’s soccer final and men’s 4x100m final
  • Saturday, Aug. 20: Men’s diving platform final, men’s soccer final and men’s 4x400m relays; Brazil will compete for the gold medal on their home turf
  • Sunday, Aug. 21: Men’s basketball final and men’s marathon; the U.S. is expected to take its third gold in a row with LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Carmelo Anthony and other top performers
