Effects of oxygen breathing on inspiratory muscle fatigue during resistive load in cycling

Study name:  Effects of oxygen breathing on inspiratory muscle fatigue during resistive load in cycling

Gender/sex and ability:  Eight healthy, trained males

Type of exercise used:  Subjects exercised in the sitting position on an electronically braked cycle ergometer

Intensity of exercise:  An incremental cycling test was performed until exhaustion. The workload on the ergometer was increased by 30 watts every 3 minutes until the subject was no longer able to maintain the pedaling frequency at a constant level (60 revolutions per minute).

Percent (%) of oxygen used:  21% or 100%

Research/study findings:  Maximum work performed by the subjects was significantly higher during hypoxia, when breathing enriched oxygen of 100% purity, when compared to breathing ambient air (210±11 watts and 181±9 watts, respectively; P<0.05). The study demonstrates inspiratory muscle fatigue occurs in healthy subjects during high-intensity exercise with inspiratory resistive loading. In this study, breathing pure oxygen increases the maximal cycling ability of the sample, on average, by 30 watts.

Oxygen Plus application/implication: Hyperoxia improves athletic performance and slows the development of muscle fatigue that occurs during incremental cycling at a mild resistive load. Breathing pure oxygen from Oxygen Plus during vigorous exercise tops off depleted oxygen levels, helping to enhance performance and speed up recovery time.
